I have so many wonderful memories of Jacob growing up. He
was an inquisitive boy right from the start. He always seemed keen to know,
discover and explore. Almost anywhere could be a place of discovery for Jacob
and I loved helping him to see new things, or just explore simple everyday things
like our compost heap. From the early weeks of his life, whenever Jacob’s mum
and dad brought him to visit, we would go to our back yard to look at, touch,
smell and listen to things. Birds, plants, insects, things that were alive (and
dead) were all of special interest (and still are). As a two year old he loved
to have worms placed in in his hand as well as just about any other insect we
discovered. Nanna was never quite so sure about this activity. On the day this
photo was taken, we were lying on the grass and just looking at the clouds.
What hidden creatures could we see in those cloud patterns? Is that a
crocodile? No, it’s an elephant? Or perhaps, a pterodactyl.
Visiting the Aquarium
We have had many wonderful days at the Aquarium, never
missing a single sea creature! I always learn something from Jacob on every
trip. The sharks and rays were always a highlight.
The Pedal Car
Another great memory I have of Jacob is him helping me to
restore a pedal car. We had seen an episode of Playschool when he was about
four and in it a man was restoring pedal cars. One day I found one and bought
it to restore. Jacob helped me to start the hard job of sanding and scraping
all the old paint off. Each time he visited he’d check how the job was going
and when it was finished he enjoyed using it.
The Maritime Museum
One of the most memorable days Jacob and I ever had was our
trip to the Maritime Museum when he was about six. There were so many exciting
things to see. Visiting HMAS Vampire, HMAS Onslow and the replica of the
Endeavour were great highlights. Jacob was very excited to sit in the Captain’s
seat on the bridge. We also had lots of fun having lunch and a run around in
Darling Harbour. Jacob enjoyed imitating the gulls!
Cooks River
There are so many memories of our trips to the Cooks River.
On every trip there always seems to be something special and new to see. We
always love looking for White-Faced Herons and many other birds. On one
memorable day, just as we were about to go home, a small marsupial mouse or
native rat ran across our paths and into a small hole. We managed to catch a
small glimpse of it hiding from us. If you look carefully you will see its tail
and part of its body.
